Swine flu - or maybe not.

My husband Carl went down with a chest infection and flu like symptoms last week.  Quite a nasty one too I might add, though he had no temperature.  Sunday night my left tonsil ached so much I thought it was plotting to blow up my throat.  Monday morning I woke up with full blown flu - swollen tonsils making it very painful to swallow, head pains (not quite like any headache I've ever had), earache, aching limbs and generally feeling washed out.  Yesterday my symptoms got worse and I also had a temperature of 38C.  Fantastic.

Having very little faith in my new GP (long story that I won't go into now), I thought I'd try out this new fangled National Pandemic Flu Service website thingy provided by the NHS.  I figured it couldn't do a worse job than my doctor whom you have to torture to get information from.

So, I went through all the questions very carefully, as I'm not one to take drugs unnecessarily, especially not antibiotics / antivirals.  At the end of the questionnaire, they gave me an authorisation number to collect some antivirals (free of charge), recommending that I take them.  Along with that was some general medical advice - stay at home and rest (like I've had a choice anyway!), drink plenty of fluids, take pain relief medicine to control fever etc.  All of which I've already been doing, but hasn't worked too well so far.

The question is - do I really have swine flu or is this just a case of 'your symptoms roughly fit so we'll throw some antivirals at you just in case'.  I wonder what happens if it isn't swine flu and some months down the line I do actually catch the real thing and because I've had a dose of Tamiflu already I either can't get more or they don't work?  I am a bit concerned about this, but being honest I feel so shitty at this point anything is worth a try, so I will take them.

On that note, my nearest distribution point for these antivirals is quite a distance away, so it's a good job I have a relative with a car!  My Mom and new step Dad have kindly offered to go and collect them for me, am waiting on delivery as we speak.  Just in case, I told them to post them through my door rather than risk contact with me.

If you've been wondering why I've been absent from my regular online activities, apart from just being very busy last week, this is why.  It's taken me almost an hour just to write this.  Generally I've been sitting / lying on the sofa, having very little energy to do much of anything apart from a few attempts to relieve my boredom with a spot of gaming.  But I can't keep that up for long.  I hate being ill, it's so damn annoying!  No idea how long it takes for Tamiflu to kick in, but I hope it's soon.  I'd like to be able to eat without pain for a start, it's torture being starving hungry but very limited on what you can eat.

Ah well, signing out for today, will hopefully be somewhere near back to normal in a few days time.

Pictures From Prom Night

It was my daughters prom tonight, and I managed to sneak and take some photos while they were all waiting to go in.  She looked so gorgeous, and I'm so very proud.  It's these moments that are precious to a parent and I'm certainly no exception there.

My daughter (Amy) is the one in the purple dress, the rather debonaire chap with her is her boyfriend, and the equally lovely girl in the pink dress is her best friend.  These photos are also on flickr - .http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenith/sets/72157621112994841

Hope you have a great night Amy!

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

This is the first song in the wedding playlist from my last post. I'm now obsessed with it. Roberta Flack performs it beautifully.

Wedding playlist finalised

Left it a little late (this week has not gone to plan at all), but I'm all done with the music for my Moms' wedding.  Playlist finalised and recorded onto 2 CDs!

This is the list I settled on -

  1. Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
  2. Gladys Knight & The Pips - Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me
  3. Dusty Springfield - I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten
  4. Celine Dion & Frank Sinatra - All the Way
  5. Diana Ross & Lionel Richie - Endless Love
  6. The Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun
  7. Johnny Mathis - I'm Stone In Love With You
  8. Dusty Springfield - Look Of Love
  9. Frank Sinatra - I've Got You Under My Skin
  10. Nat King Cole - When I Fall In Love
  11. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
  12. The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin'
  13. Diana Ross - Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand)
  14. Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love
  15. The Carpenters - I Won't Last A Day Without You
  16. Dido - Thank You
  17. Charles Aznavour - She
  18. The Commodores - Easy
  19. Michael Jackson - I Just Can't Stop Loving You (feat. Siedah Garrett)
  20. The Stylistics - Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)
  21. The Police - Every Breath You Take
A fine selection that even a metal fan like me can enjoy!  Well, apart from the Celine Dion part anyway (that was all my Mom).

So now that's out of the way, all that's left is to practise some more with my camera (I'm doing the photography for the wedding) and give my house a good clean for guests at the weekend.  Have to say the former will be far more enjoyable than the latter, but it'll all be well worth it.

Wedding ceremony playlist

My Mom is getting married next weekend!  I've been put in charge of the photography, but I'm also, with the happy couples help, compiling a CD for the ceremony.  Last night I sat down with them and we put our heads together.  The list is pretty much complete, I need maybe another 4 or 5 songs.

Here's what we have so far -

  1. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack (for brides 'walk down the aisle'
  2. Best Thing That Happened to Me - Gladys Knight & The Pips (for the signing of the register)
  3. I Close my Eyes and Count to Ten - Dusty Springfield (for the signing of the register)
  4. All the Way - Celine Dion & Frank Sinatra (for leaving the ceremony room)

The rest are 'filler' songs for when guests are arriving etc.  In no particular order, we have -

  • We've Only Just Begun - The Carpenters
  • I'm Stone in Love With You - Johnny Mathis
  • When I Fall in Love - Nat King Cole
  • I've Got You Under my Skin - Frank Sinatra
  • The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield
  • Endless - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
  • Easy - The Commodores
  • I Won't Last a Day Without You - The Carpenters
  • You are Always on my Mind - Elvis Presley
  • Reach Out and Touch - Diana Ross
  • God Only Knows - Beach Boys
  • California Dreamin' - The Mamas & The Papas
  • Can't Give You Anything But my Love - The Stylistics
  • How Deep is Your Love - Bee Gees
  • I Just Can't Stop Loving You - Michael Jackson
  • She - Charles Aznavour
  • Every Breath You Take - The Police
  • Annie's Song - John Denver
  • Thank You - Dido

If you're reading this and happen to have any suggestions (suitable for a couple in their early 60's) I'd love to hear them!

Moving to Posterous

My personal blog has resided at http://jackieplage.com for quite a while now.  I don't blog regularly over there however, and haven't for a number of months.  I'm not sure why, I guess I just lost interest.  Microblogging has definitely effected the frequency of my regular blog posts, but there are times when 140 characters just doesn't cut it.

Posterous has now added quite a number of useful features, and it's very convenient to use.  I'm hoping that a fresh start will give me the push I need to blog a little more frequently.  That said, I can't be held accountable for the quality of posts here, I'm not about to devote a lot of time to it.  My intention is to do that on a more concentrated subject over at http://naxtr.com instead.

So I guess this blog will be used more for snippets that are a little too big for identi.ca, with a possible random sprinkling of more traditional blog posts.

Incidentally, I did try to import my old blog (running WordPress) into Posterous, but it lost all the formatting.  There's no way in hell I'm going to go back over a few hundred posts and re-do all the paragraph breaks etc.!  When I'm feeling less lazy I'll do some searching around and see if there's a solution for that.

Once in a Lifetime

Was just listening to the 'Stop Making Sense' album by Talking Heads. This is a sample of what you're missing if you haven't discovered it yet.

Absolute brilliance!

It's been a while...

It's been quite a long time actually, since I checked out Posterous.  I always thought it had great potential and I see that quite a few new features have been added over the last year too.

I'm still stuck on what to use it for though.  I have somewhere to blog already.  Maybe a tumblr replacement?  Or maybe I should start writing poetry again?  Maybe a combination of original writing and book reviews?  Or maybe I have enough services that I barely use already!

Wondering how this auto-posting stuff works too.  Guess I'm about to find out!
